bi-medEctoin® – A Highly Effective Natural Protective Molecule with Countless Applications
bi-medEctoin® is a natural active ingredient that is revolutionising equine care. Its natural origin, combined with powerful protective properties, makes it a valuable alternative to conventional care products. Whether for respiratory issues, skin irritations or as a preventative measure – bi-medEctoin® provides gentle yet effective support for the health and wellbeing of horses.
Even if you're not yet familiar with bi-medEctoin® by name, chances are you've already come across it – for instance, as an ingredient in your face cream, nasal spray, eye drops or throat lozenges. Thanks to its natural cell-protecting properties and high efficacy, Ectoin® has been successfully used in human medical and cosmetic products for decades. To date, more than 40 scientific studies have confirmed the outstanding effectiveness and tolerability of Ectoin® in a wide range of applications.
The Discovery of Ectoin®
Ectoin® was discovered in the mid-1980s in a dried-up salt lake in the Wadi El Natrun desert in Egypt – one of the most hostile places on earth. German researchers found that bacteria were able to not only survive but thrive despite extreme heat, high salinity, and intense UV radiation. The secret behind this astonishing phenomenon was soon revealed: the bacteria produced Ectoin® to protect themselves from these extreme environmental conditions.
After many years of research and development, our parent company, bitop AG, successfully replicated the natural production process using a biotechnological method. This made it possible to manufacture Ectoin® and incorporate it into medical, cosmetic, and care products.
How does bi-medEctoin® work?
bi-medEctoin® is a stress-protection molecule from the group of extremolytes. It protects against external influences and extreme environmental conditions, such as pollutants, UV light, and temperature fluctuations. It’s essentially nature’s own self-defence strategy – one we can harness for our benefit.
Its effect is based on a simple three-step mechanism:
1. Formation of the “Ectoin Hydro Complex”
bi-medEctoin® attracts water molecules from its surroundings, binds them, and forms the so-called Ectoin Hydro Complex.
2. Moisturising and Protective Action
The water-bound bi-medEctoin® molecules form a gentle shield around the cells or cell surfaces (e.g. skin or mucosa). This water-based layer provides a protective barrier against environmental stressors, while deeply moisturising and nourishing the surface.
3. Strengthening and Regeneration of the Cell Membrane
While shielding the cells, the Ectoin Hydro Complex also helps to restore the natural barrier function of the cell membrane by making it more fluid. At the same time, the tissue can regenerate more quickly during acute inflammatory processes.
In short: bi-medEctoin® promotes self-healing and enhances the cell’s natural resilience.
Are There Any Known Side Effects?
bi-medEctoin® works purely through a physical mechanism and is naturally eliminated by the body over time. This makes it particularly well tolerated, with no known side effects or serious adverse reactions reported to date.
When used correctly and in appropriate dosage, bi-medEctoin® can be applied regularly and over the long term. There is no habituation effect, meaning the effectiveness does not diminish over time.
How Can Horses Benefit from bi-medEctoin®?
As an ingredient in equine care products, bi-medEctoin® can support your horse in a variety of ways. It has proven especially effective in caring for the:
Respiratory system
e.g. in horses with coughs, equine asthma or allergies
Skin
e.g. in horses with irritated, dry or flaky skin, small wounds, eczema, mud fever or sunburn
Eyes
e.g. in horses with dry, watering or fly-irritated eyes, or recurrent uveitis
The mode of action is the same across all applications: by moisturising, protecting and nourishing the tissue, bi-medEctoin® stimulates self-healing of the skin and mucous membranes and supports natural regeneration.
